Domestic Travel on a Budget: Traveling in the Off Season

Traveling in the off season can often save you money on air fare, food and lodging. Off season travel can also reduce the time you spend waiting in line and the number of people that you encounter once you arrive at your destination. By definition, your savings on domestic travel during the off season will depend on where you are going and what time of year you plan to go.

If you are going to the beach, consider going in the fall or winter. The off season for most beaches is between Labor Day and Memorial Day, and most hotels, motels, and rentals are cheaper during the off season. Before you make your reservations, research what is open during the off season. In many places—like beaches—some hotels, shops, and restaurants close during the off season.

Peak tourist season for most mountain destinations is the fall, when the leaves are changing. Most lodging rates increase during this period, so keep that in mind if you are watching your budget. Mountain destinations can also be popular in the summer with people avoiding the warmer climates.

Some destinations may not have an off season. Places with more temperate climates year round may not have off season discounts.

Also, if you are planning a trip to New York City or another large city in the U.S., you may not be able to find any off season discounts. The major reason lots of tourist destinations have off season discounts is to attract customers during a slow time of the year. However, since large cities have local residents that support the economy year-round, many will not have any off season discounts.

Investigate the costs of air fare and lodging at different times of the year before you make your reservations. If your travel plans are flexible, find out when the rates go down at your particular destination. Working with a travel agent can help you find the cheapest time of year to travel. Also consider package deals—some vacation discounters and consolidators offer deals during the off season that can save you a great deal of money.
