Domestic Travel on a Budget: Eating Inexpensively on Vacation

Food budgets can go quickly on vacation because the food in tourist destinations is typically more expensive than other places. Reducing the amount of money you spend on food while on vacation is easier if you are traveling domestically. If you are driving to your destination, pack a cooler full of snacks, drinks and sandwiches to avoid temptation at convenience stores and gas stations.

If you are traveling by train or bus, check with the bus or train company to see if they allow outside food on board. Many trains offer dining cars and may not allow you to bring food on board. Depending on the length of your trip, your bus may stop at restaurants and give you a chance to get off the bus, stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat. Budget for these small food stops, as they can add up after a while.

Also, once you have arrived at your destination, whether by car, train, bus or airplane, visit the local grocery store and stock up on items you will need every day, such as breakfast foods, snacks and drinks. This will reduce the amount of money you spend in restaurants. If you do not have the capability to store food where you are staying, save your money for a few expensive dinners that will help make your vacation experience special.

Another way to eat cheaply on vacation is to eat where the locals eat. Typically, restaurants that are geared towards tourists are more expensive than restaurants that serve mostly local residents. Seek out local favorite restaurants by asking around or by consulting one of the many guidebooks or internet sites devoted to finding good, inexpensive dining establishments. Planning where you’ll eat before you leave is a good idea and may save you money in the long run.

Eating fast food can be less expensive than eating in restaurants, but it can also add up. Watch your food costs because it is easy to let things slip by a snack or drink at a time. As with anything else, advance planning can save you a great deal of money.
