International Travel: Eating on a Budget

Eating can be one of your biggest budget-busters when you are traveling. However, there are several things you can do to reduce the amount of money you spend on food while you are traveling and maybe make your trip a more authentic experience. As with everything, a little advance research will make your trip flow more smoothly.

The best advice for eating on a budget when you are traveling internationally is to eat where the local residents choose to eat. However, this can require some imagination, flexibility, and openness to trying new things, because the local cuisine may be a far cry from what you are used to eating at home.

Doing research before you leave will also save you money on food. Searching guidebooks and the internet are a good way to find information about the best and cheapest spots to eat.

If you are eating in tourists areas, some restaurants may offer specials during certain times of the day. It may mean you have to eat earlier or later than you are accustomed, but it is a good way to save a few dollars.

Another way to reduce your food costs is to buy food from the local market or grocer and prepare it yourself. This will only work if your hotel room has a kitchenette or if you are staying in a hostel or private home. If you do this, keep in mind that you may not be able to tolerate the local water. Buy and cook in bottled water to avoid traveler’s diarrhea. Peel fresh fruit and wash it in bottled water and do not buy food from street vendors.

If you have purchased a package deal that includes airfare and lodging, check to see if food is included in the cost of the package. Some of the vacation packages offered at a discount are all-inclusive, which means the majority of your meals are covered, if you eat at the hotel. Any food or drinks you purchase outside of the hotel will not be covered in this cost.
