International Budget Travel: The Off Season

International travel can be quite expensive, especially if you are traveling during the height of tourist season. One of the best ways to save money is to visit countries during the off season. Most lodging, food and transportation are cheaper because there are not as many tourists around and not as much demand. You are more likely to be able to get a good vacation package traveling in the off season.

If you are traveling into a different hemisphere, keep in mind that the seasons are the opposite of your home. For example, if it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This can be to your advantage, because your travel expenses will probably be less if you are traveling in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter when there are not many tourists around. Called the “hidden season” in many places, the winters can be quite mild in some places in the Southern Hemisphere and offer most of the perks of the summer.

Even if you are not traveling to a different hemisphere, consider making your trip in the off season. Airfare, vacation package deals, and lodgings are often cheaper in the winter. For instance, traveling from the U.S. to Europe in the winter can be a very affordable trip. Lots of companies offer travel packages in the winter for much less than the fares in the summer. The lines to get into tourist sites are also shorter, which means you are more likely to be able to do and see the major tourists attractions without much stress and time spent waiting.

If you are planning to go to the beach, consider traveling in the fall or winter when there will be fewer people. In some places, the fall and winter can be as pleasant as the summer. However, water temperatures may prohibit swimming, so bear that in mind when planning your vacation and activities. Mountain destinations tend to be more popular year round, as there are outdoor sports such as skiing and snowboarding in the winter and cooler, more temperate summers that tend to draw tourists year round.
